Jerry Currey is a man on the go. Some of his more adventurous activities include snow skiing and whitewater rafting. The Vietnam War veteran doesn’t shy away from trying new things, despite losing both his sight and his right leg below the knee in Vietnam.
“I like to stay active, to keep moving around,” he said. Currey has been Matt Bulow’s patient for a number of years. He uses the Vari-Flex® foot by Ossur® with a suction socket. He likes the prosthesis because, “It’s really light, only three or four pounds, so I can get around on it real good,” he explained. He says the Flex foot is especially good for walking up and down hills.
The Blinded Veterans Association, of which Currey is a member, sponsored a snow skiing trip several years ago. The group offers support and activities to blinded veterans across the nation. Currey went on the trip with other members of the Tennessee chapter. “I made it down pretty good,” he said of skiing. “I slipped a little, but I thoroughly enjoyed the trip,” he added. Currey went whitewater rafting in the summer of 2010 and plans to return in the fall. He is also a member of the Disabled American Veterans, a non-profit group that also arranges activities and support for veterans and was a long-time volunteer at a Veterans Administration hospital.
Currey likes to fish and play golf. Being an amputee has not kept him from trying new activities. He says Matt Bulow is very supportive. “He wants you to be satisfied. He’s real serious when he comes in. He wants you to do everything you want to do. He will do everything he can to get you mobile and moving around. I thought, if he’s willing to help me, I’m going to help myself.”
He adds that he feels comfortable asking Bulow any question. “If he does not know the answer, he will find it for you. You can ask him anything,” he said.
Currey was referred to Bulow by a friend and says he would send anyone who needed a prosthesis to Bulow BioTech Prosthetics. “Matt just has a super attitude and he treats everyone well, absolutely everyone.” He says he is very thankful to still be active and has no plans to slow down anytime soon.
He was raised in Murfreesboro, Tenn., but now lives with his wife in Mount Juliet, Tenn., where he still has family.
