Frank Wall

Nashville media featured Frank Wall on December 22, 2010. He received a new prosthesis with funding from the Mending Limbs Organization. They came out to video Frank receiving his new prosthesis and to help spread the awareness of what the Mending Limbs Organization does because there are so many amputees that need help. Acting as a Good Samaritan changed Frank Wall’s life. In 2008, he pulled off the road to assist a man changing a tire on I-24 in Clarksville, Tenn. As Wall stepped out of his car, an impaired driver wildly veered onto the shoulder and struck Wall. The driver’s trailer severed Wall’s leg.

After being airlifted to Vanderbilt Medical Center’s Trauma Unit in Nashville, Wall spent 64 days in the hospital. His leg was amputated above the knee, he lost his bladder and spleen, and suffered injuries to his liver, and kidney and lung. It took 22 surgeries and 97 pints of blood before Wall could leave the hospital. “I’m a blessed man,” he said.

After Wall was fitted with a prosthesis from another artificial limb specialist, he lived in discomfort for 18 months, unable to walk comfortably on an artificial leg that wasn’t the correct length or fit. While visiting a relative at Vanderbilt Medical Center, he ran into Dr. William Obremskey, the doctor who amputated Wall’s leg. The doctor questioned why Wall needed crutches. When Dr. Obremskey heard the explanation, he took out his prescription pad and wrote Matt Bulow’s name and the phone number at Bulow BioTech, telling Wall to call. “I did and Matt had me in that office within two days,” Wall said.

Bulow immediately made a cast of Wall’s stump and built an entirely new seal-in suction socket to fit Wall’s prosthesis, a Otto Bock ® 3R60 knee and Talux ® foot. “Matt casts to the person,” Wall explained. “Every amputee is different. Matt makes his sockets custom-fit to fit that person.”

With his original artificial limb, Wall expected to spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair—not the ideal situation for a man who owns a roofing company. After receiving a new prosthetic leg, Wall let Bulow adjust the prosthesis and the fittings. When the finished socket was ready, Wall was in and out of Bulow’s office in one hour, then headed directly to a jobsite, ready to get back to work. “This thing is amazing compared to the other,” Wall stated. “I never had a pain after he put the first socket on since.”

Wall calls Bulow outstanding. “He understands amputees,” said Wall. “He fixes your prosthesis to meet your needs as to what you do. He got me out of a truck. I can get around a jobsite now.”

Bulow BioTech Prosthetics is the best option available especially, Wall said, because of the staff. “The personnel is marvelous,” said Wall. “They have been outstanding. You call them, they get answers for you. They’re very committed. They care about people. They care about their needs. They do all they can to meet those needs. I believe in them so much.” In fact, he recommends Bulow BioTech Prosthetics to anyone he comes across who can’t walk correctly or comfortably in their prostheses. I refer to Matt because I know he can take care of them,” Wall said.
